NATURAL SUNSCREEN

What is it?

As much as we enjoy the first rays of the sun, protection for the skin is a must.

Because not only sunburn, but also light-induced skin ageing is a problem.

What role does UVA and UVB radiation play?

And what sun protection is acceptable in natural cosmetics?

Natural sunscreens are certainly a polarising topic, but why? Let’s see!

Sun protection is a must - but which one?

Actually, sun protection is an important topic throughout the whole year. Because when the sun shines, your skin needs protection - it doesn't matter if it's winter, summer, spring or autumn. However, the topic is of course much more present in summer.

Our sun protection has to be able to do a lot of things. To begin with, it has to ward off UVA and UVB rays and ideally also care for your skin. It should be as natural as possible (keyword "INCI list”) because nature should not suffer from your sun protection.

The question is, however, what kind of sun protection can rightly be called “natural cosmetics”?

Does natural sunscreen exist?

The search for natural sun protection that meets your expectations is not as easy as it should be - not to mention liquid plastic, silicones and other ingredients that are usually found in conventional products. UV filters are not an easy topic from a natural cosmetic point of view, as the different types of filters show...

A look at the ingredients

  • Chemical filters

:-) Invisible protection

:-( For optimal protection you have to reapply cream constantly

:-( Some substances are suspected to have hormonal effects

:-( Not natural

:-( Dangerous for aquatic organisms and waters: Especially, oxybenzone and octinoxate are environmental hazards. Basically, we are contributing to coral reef "bleaching" and this can kill the coral ecosystems over time.

Chemical filters absorb the radiation and convert it into heat energy. These filters are invisible on the skin. However, they lose their effectiveness after some time. That is why it is particularly important to reapply cream frequently and generously. Chemical filters are also suspected of having a hormonal effect. Therefore, they are especially not the product of choice for children and pregnant women. Additionally, these chemicals are very harmful to our waters.

>>> Conclusion: Natural care looks different to us. Chemical filters are also clearly the worst solution for nature. <<<

  • Mineral filters - the choice of natural cosmetics

:-) Photo-stability with long-lasting effect

:-) Natural protection

:-( Depending on the product, a white film may be visible

:-) On the other hand, great for children: visible protection

On the other hand, there are the mineral filters that natural sun cosmetics normally rely on. They form a mechanical protection from substances such as zinc oxide or titanium oxide, which deflect sun-rays from the skin like small mirrors. They provide reliable protection and are harmless to your health as they don’t imply nano-particles. From a natural cosmetic point of view, this is clearly our recommendation.

Only the look could dampen the joy. Mineral filters often leave a visible white film on the skin.

>>> Conclusion: A clear recommendation for people that care about natural cosmetics just like we do.

And there are products that hardly "whiten" at all, as we have seen in a self-experiment. <<<

  • Nano-filters still have little research

:-) Invisible protection

:-( Harmful to health

:-( Long-term effects are not yet sufficiently proven

To actually counteract the “ghost” look, some manufacturers resort to mineral filters with nanoparticles. Here, the filter particles are so small that they leave no visible traces. However, it is still unclear how nanoparticles affect the body in the long term.

Can their size allow them to reach the bloodstream? How do they affect our DNA? All of this has hardly been researched yet.

But one thing is certain.

The natural cosmetics industry treats nanotechnology with caution.

How do you recognise whether nanoparticles are contained in your sunscreen? Easy - You can spot them indicated as "nano" next to individual ingredients in the INCI list. For sure you won’t find this in natural cosmetic products.

>>> Conclusion: Be careful with this! Good for you and the planet looks different. We are fortunate to tell you that we have created invisible formulations without this uncertain technology. <<<

Coral-friendly sun protection

Many conventional sunscreens contain chemical compounds that dissolve in water and are hands down toxic to the marine ecosystem. Unfortunately, this also applies to many waterproof products with chemical filters. As some media reports say, waterproof protection is often limited in time (twice 20 minutes). After that, the water is downright better creamed than your skin, which of course also reduces your own protection. Not to mention the struggle for our oceans.

Chemicals contribute to the death of corals and damage reefs; it's the reason many snorkelling trip providers now ban the use of sunscreen. Ideally, all natural cosmetic manufacturers not only focussed on skin health, but also on a healthy environment.

At Wisdom Cares, we have designed a sunscreen that combines both, skin and environmental care.

Our objective is to offer sun care that has minimal impact on our shared environment.

Products that we are free to enjoy, and move us all closer towards a plastic and chemical free life.

Developed with leading experts in natural skincare and tested to European standards - the highest in global sunscreen regulation -

our new sunscreen NOMADE combines mineral and organic-based filters in order to provide 100% natural sun protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Enriched with algae extract and tamanu oil, our Nomade sunscreen provides protection and hydration.

In addition, antioxidant and antibacterial properties from carrot oil nourish the skin, preventing irritation and breakouts.

In general we can agree that we all have to pay more attention to what we put on and in our bodies.

Let’s focus on protection without pollution.
